Shopping in Beijing

When we got the fried soup dumplings in Shanghai the long line was full of Chinese and Foreigners alike, but on South Luogu Lane there was a place where only Chinese were in the long line. It was a sort of rice custard place—I tried the one Amanda got, and it wasn’t bad, but it’s not something that would appeal to a Westerner’s pallet. It’s interesting that we have such different tastes. Another testament to why international students miss their home country’s cuisine so much when studying in the United States.

In the midst of wealth and state-of-the-art development in 2nd-ring Beijing. This seemed to be where the workers were living. Inside the tent is a row of cots topped with blankets. The most poignant thing about this is that these are the men who are building this incredible infrastructure full of luxury apartments and designer shopping malls, yet they must live in a tent, most likely far away from their families and for a significant part of the year.

In Beijing with Bryant graduate Amanda Yang. For dessert we had chunks of bread soaked in vanilla ice cream. Different. And Amanda insisted that I taste local Beijing yoghurt, which was quite good.

By the way, the restaurant called 1949, located in the Beijing’s second ring, has an incredible Beijing Roast Duck! I couldn’t stop eating it.

I took the bullet train from Shanghai to Beijing to experience traveling at over 300 km per hour (about 190 mph). It took about 5 1/2 hours to get to Beijing, which is amazing considering the distance and the time it would take to get there by car or bus. Imagine getting from Salt Lake to LA in 4 hours instead of 11 or from Boston to Columbus in 5 hours instead of 13. It really is incredible.
Shanghai to Beijing: 763 miles, 15 hrs driving
Salt Lake City to Los Angeles: 689 miles, 11 hrs driving
Boston to Columbus: 775 miles, 13 hrs driving
Shanghai to Beijing in the gaotie train: 5 1/2 hrs
The above photo is of Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai.
