Keep Off the Grass
In Congtai Park in Handan these guards periodically swept the grassy areas telling people to get off the grass. I understand that they want to keep the park looking nice and part of that entails maintaining the grass, and even in the United States there are places where they ask people not to walk on the grass, but typically in a public park I would expect that there at least be a number of designated areas where it’s okay to walk, play, lie down, or have a picnic on the grass.
On my previous trip to China I recall seeing a couple of parks with no grass at all, rather rocks covered virtually every inch of what grass typically would. Seems like a practical solution to maintaining the lawn as well as having to constantly ask people to get off the grass, though I prefer a grass park to a rock park. I have also seen rocks used in the same way in people’s yards in the southwestern United States. I guess when it comes down to it, whether it’s grass or rocks it’s really all about aesthetics.
