July 18, 2012 I took the bullet train from Shanghai to Beijing to experience traveling at over 300 km per hour (about 190 mph). It took about 5 1/2 hours to get to Beijing, which is amazing considering the distance and the time it would take to get there by car or bus. Imagine getting from Salt Lake to LA in 4 hours instead of 11 or from Boston to Columbus in 5 hours instead of 13. It really is incredible. Shanghai to Beijing: 763 miles, 15 hrs driving Salt Lake City to Los Angeles: 689 miles, 11 hrs driving Boston to Columbus: 775 miles, 13 hrs driving Shanghai to Beijing in the gaotie train: 5 1/2 hrs The above photo is of Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai.
