Longmen Caves, Luoyang, Henan Province
Seeing a stone Buddha in a museum can be pretty cool depending on its size and the detail in the sculpture. But seeing thousands of Buddhas carved into the mountainside is awe-inspiring. I think of the people who did this and the long hours of dedication it took to complete any one of these carvings and I am again amazed by what human beings can accomplish. I like to think that their carving these figures into the mountain was a meditative exercise meant to help them develop patience, a sense of nowness, and assist them in their path toward enlightenment.
